HAMMONTON – Wine enthusiasts and amateur winemakers converged on Elvin’s Hall at Hammonton Fire House No. 2 Saturday, March 10 for the seventh annual Hammonton Rotary Club Homemade Wine Tasting Event.
More than 200 guests had the opportunity to sample 85 wines in the name of fun and friendly competition, while raising money for worthwhile community programs.
Wines were judged by a panel of 11 certified wine experts who gathered a week ahead of the event to determine first- and second-place awards in 18 categories, and a Best of Show overall award.
Guests also cast their votes to determine the People’s Choice in 18 categories, and an overall Best of Show winner.
The Best of Show as determined by the professional judges was a tie between a 2010 Zinfandel entered by Frank Raso, and a 2010 Cabernet Merlot by John Casadia. The 2012 winner of the Best of Show Peoples Choice award was 2011 Fredonia entered by Mike Storey.
As in years past, the panel of professional judges was led by Gary Pavils, Ph.D., Atlantic County agricultural agent who brought together 10 fellow members of the Dionysian Society to carefully score and evaluate the entries.
The evening featured a buffet dinner by Rocco’s Townhouse, music by James Ammann of T.N.T. Sound Productions, and raffle items provided by the generous donations of numerous local businesses, and a 50/50 raffle.
