Wine connoisseurs filled Elvin’s Hall at Hammonton Fire House No. 2 Saturday, March 23 for the eighth annual Hammonton Rotary Club Homemade Wine Tasting Event.
Some 200 guests had the opportunity to sample and judge 66 wines of all types, enjoy good food, and win doors prizes while raising money for worthwhile community programs.
Wines were judged by a panel of 11 certified wine experts who gathered a week ahead of the event to determine first- and second-place awards in 18 categories, and a Best of Show overall award.
Guests also cast their votes to determine the People’s Choice in each category, and an overall Best of Show winner.
The Best of Show as determined by the professional judges went to John Casadia for a 2012 raspberry wine entered in the sweet raspberry category. The Best of Show Peoples Choice award went to Joe Pauline for his 2011 coffee port, entered in the sweet port category.
The panel of professional judges was led by Gary Pavils, Ph.D., Atlantic County agricultural agent, who brought together 10 fellow members of the Dionysian Society to carefully score and evaluate the entries.
The evening featured a buffet dinner by Rocco’s Townhouse, music by James Ammann of T.N.T. Sound Productions, and raffle items, many of which were donated by local businesses, and a 50/50 raffle.
Proceeds support the Hammonton Rotary Scholarship Foundation, the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, youth sports, the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) program and other local and international humanitarian and service projects.
