The Hammonton Rotary Club scholarship has a new name and a new focus on community service.
What was previously known as the Hammonton Rotary Club Foundation Scholarship has been renamed the Hammonton Rotary Club Hugh LaMonaca Community Service Scholarship, in tribute to the person most responsible for its launch more than 20 years ago.
LaMonaca, who served as president for the club’s 1997-1998 year, passed away on January 22, 2023, just two days shy of his 89th birthday.
He created Hammonton Rotary’s 501c3 charitable foundation. The first scholarship was awarded in 2000 with more than $45,000 awarded since its founding.
The scholarship offers a maximum award of $2,000.
He was also influential in establishing the club’s ongoing support of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society Food Pantry. Since 1997 the club has contributed more than $45,000 and countless service hours toward its mission of feeding the less fortunate in our community.
LaMonaca was a shining example of Rotary’s “Service Above Self” motto and the inspiration behind the scholarship’s renewed focus on service. Leadership and academics are the other criteria with a 3.0 unweighted GPA required to apply.
It’s open to any graduating senior from Hammonton or attending high school in Hammonton. Students attending the Atlantic County Institute of Technology are eligible to apply.
