The region’s best amateur winemakers came together March 25 at Hammonton Fire Company No. 2 for the 17th Annual Hammonton Rotary Wine Tasting Event.
Elvins Hall was sold out, filled with wine enthusiasts who sniffed, swirled and sipped to choose their favorites from 114 entries.
Winemakers were anxious to find out whose creation would be judged the best by the crowd on hand, and by a team of professional judges who gathered March 19 to rate each entry.
People’s Choice had one winner per flight. The professional judges determined first- and second-place awards. Because there were so many entries, some categories included third-place professional winners too.
Makers of winning wines in each category received certificates, with first-place winners receiving certificates and a medal.
The People’s Choice Best of Show was a tie between Brandon DePasquale and John Holroyd (and friends). The Professionals’ Choice Best of Show winner was Joseph DiGerolamo.

Guests were treated to a buffet dinner prepared by Rocco’s Townhouse. They also participated in a chance auction for a variety of prizes including jewelry, handbags, an outdoor movie projection system complete with blow-up screen, plus numerous prizes and gift certificates donated by local businesses. Winner of the 50/50 went home with more than $1,500.
While People’s Choice votes were being counted, the capacity crowd heard an inspiring talk from Michael Thompson, Governor of Rotary District 7505, which oversees 73 Rotary clubs in South Jersey. Thompson explained the work that Rotary does for people in need locally and around the world by supporting important causes like education, public health and feeding people in need.
The Hammonton Rotary Club makes its mark locally through scholarships for graduating high school seniors, youth leadership programs for high school juniors, continued support of local youth sports, the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, veterans and various other causes. The Hammonton Rotary Club has been putting service above self since 1958.
